Four decades shaped by the coast

Jim Murray has spent a working life within sight of the ocean, and the work shows it: palettes pulled from fog and rust, forms borrowed from hulls and headlands, surfaces that let weather be a collaborator rather than an enemy. His primary materials — canvas, corten steel, and marine-grade pigment — age the way the coastline does, which is precisely the point.

Now in his fourth decade of studio practice, Jim is a mid-career artist whose work has entered more than 120 private and corporate collections across North America and Europe, including hotel groups, healthcare institutions, and diplomatic spaces.

The studio practice

  • Original works: paintings and steel pieces developed in series, each documented and catalogued on completion.
  • Commissions: site-specific works for lobbies, atriums, and private homes, developed from drawings and material samples before fabrication.
  • Provenance service: every piece sold carries signed documentation — date, series, materials, and care guidance — kept on record at the studio.

Collectors describe the work the same way regardless of scale: quiet from across the room, endlessly detailed up close. That is deliberate. Jim builds each piece to hold attention at both distances, which is why the works suit public spaces as naturally as living rooms.

Working with the studio

Pieces ship worldwide from the coastal studio, crated by the same hands that made them. Commissions begin with a conversation about the space and the light it gets — the two things that matter most — and end with an installation the artist attends when distance allows. Jim Murray is contemporary fine art from a working coastal studio: original series, commissions, and documented provenance for collectors who want the work and its story to last in equal measure.
